Final Post

Well I've now hit my 1000 post when I always said I'd call it a day. As much as I've loved doing the 125  and a big thank you to all who played along even if you did end up costing me a lot of money! it has confirmed it is time to stop.

I've started to repeat myself (there are only so many Lloyd Cole posts I can write and I think I'm well beyond the number people would want to read!) and I've kind of run out of themes (anyone who has stuck with the blog knows how I've loved a theme)

I started in august 2009 and thought I might make it to September and now my increasing waistline and growing children need both some attention.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to leave comments, the one offs , the occasional pop bys and the regulars - Phil who I think was my first reader as he somehow found my first post left a comment and stuck with me ever since , Tim who has introduced me to some great new music , Echo for writing with more  certainty  and feeling than I ever could. Other bloggers Jc for offering great advice and patience when I tried to figure out how actually use blogger , Trev for allowing me to spend 6 months posting tracks every Monday for his band , Seamus for getting me to read books I wouldn't normally read and listen to music I'd previously shut my ears to and anyone in the blog heaven side bar - I know how dam difficult and time consuming this blogging thing is.

Thanks for putting up with my ramblings , my there are 2 views the wrong one and my view viewpoint, my inappropriate use of !! and my need to spell from as form

Never say never , I'm sure after a bit I'll get itchy fingers or hear a new band I've just got to share, but for now cheerio and I raise you a digital dram

Final Song

  1. David, every day I wake up and check out your blog, and it's like a birthday, opening a surprise present that I almost always appreciate. Sometimes the gift is familiar but with some cool new accessory; other times something completely new & wonderful, prompting me to go out and buy the whole set; on rare occassion it's a stripey fuchsia thing with sparkles that I don't care for, but know that the thought behind it was well-intentioned. I'm really gonna miss it all...

Maintaining a blog like this through 1000 posts is remarkable. The time, thought and dedication required boggles my mind. I can't thank you enough for all of the great conversation & tip-offs to music that I surely would have never dug up on my own. I've got stacks of CD's awaiting a proper listen and more in the mail, maybe enough until you get the "itch" again? If you get tired of playing golf, reading romance novels and going to the pub... please consider cranking COS up again? Even one posting every couple of weeks would be fantastic!

Cheers mate, to you & your labour of love Cathedrals Of Sound!!!

    Tim

  2. ...and the world continues to change! Thank you so very much David. Cathedrals Of Sound has been a welcome part of every day since I discovered it through JC his The Vinyl Villain blog. It has been a pleasure to have your open forum for commentary and discussion of the music that will most certainly find it's import in coming generations. We are the the generation of musical change that picked up from punk and ran with it.
You are certainly a kindred spirit when it comes to musical appreciation and I have to admit that you have brought some very interesting reading material to my attention the past few years after a very long time not giving books a great deal of attention.
Whatever the future holds for you I hope you and your's certainly enjoy it. I will be pleased to see an occasional post from you in the hopes of continuing the conversation.

  3. You're going to be missed, David. I check your blog first thing every morning. Coffee in hand and blurry eyed ,a few minutes reading your words is the perfect start to the day.
Having a couple of young lads of my own I know how much time and energy is needed to keep them happy. It's remarkable you've been able to juggle this long, but still hope you'll let us know if something new worth listening to comes along.
Thanks for the great music.New,old, known and unknown, it's been a blast.
'Final Song' just came up on my 5 random tracks for JC over at Villain Mansion. Great new album from OMD and an excellent track to finish with.

  4. Even though I didn't comment too often. I still read everything. David, I tried giving up before, but you do get that nervous twitch when the computer is looking at you! There is always something else to write.
One thing I was amazed at was the amount of Irish content to have on this blog. I know you said you lived with a couple of Irish guys once but still doesn't explain how you got to know them all. A lot of Irish bands don't get a listen across the pond and I think you have given them a voice. For that I thank you.
Go off and enjoy your children and come back to us when you are ready to discuss Radiohead!!

  5. Blimey, this feels like a loss.
I'd actually like to thank you for giving me back at least 15 minutes of my daily life David.
No more sneaky peeks to check what's on your turntable, bedside table or breakfast table.
I'll also be saving up my Amazon vouchers again.
Bucks Fizz's 'Get Ready' has just hit the doormat; as the final of your many recommendations invested in I'm sure it's an appropriate high point to end on...
    Your company will be missed.
Maybe it's time to make this virtual friendship more virtuous.
    Beer anyone?

Ha! The posting code that just flashed up was: 'Premat endong'
Talk about appropriate 'last words' for a man whose spellink will be missed as much as his bon mots.

  7. As a silent reader of your blog...I just want to tell you thanks. I would check once a week or so and you sold me on a couple of bands that I liked but now I really like (ABC and Lloyd Cole for example). Anyway, thanks for all of your time and energy and the great commentary on music!

  8. Thanks David, especially for the inspiration to start writing more regularly about music, and for making me listen to some music I wouldn't have otherwise. I am sure that I can find some posts in the archive whenever I need a fix but you will always be welcomed back if you ever decide to start on that second 1000.

  9. I hate to see you go, but I get it. I have two little ones, and one of them is disabled. My life is a little bit like Maureen from Nick Hornby's 'Long Way Down,' but there are a handful of bloggers, you included, that have been great company. If and when you decide to return, I will be there to read, rate and rankle. Best of luck to you. Take care.

  10. David.....

I can only echo what has been said already. Yours has been a place of marvellous entertainment over the past three and a bit years and a wonderful corner of the internet.

As Phil says, by pure coincidence, Final Song will very soon be making an appeearance over at TVV....and rather spookily, I stitched Phil's contribution together the same day of your 1,000th posting.

You know there will always be a place for you at TVV should you feel the need to scratch the blogging itch without kick-starting CofS.

    All the very best amigo.

  11. Don't want to repeat what has already been said, but I hope at that in the future when all's well you'll come back to what you know.

See? A Morrissey lyric and an Embrace lyric in the same sentence. This is what good music blogs, like yours, can do to the mind...

Wish you weren't going, hope you come back some time...

  13. David,

Thanks for sharing with us your love of great music and steering me in the direction of where I can find even more favourites. You will be missed. Hope you return from time to time but in the meantime I still have lots of posts to discover.

  14. Just wanted to say thanks David for inspiring me to start my blog a couple of years back. Also a huge thanks for taking the time to reply to my emails that I sent you for advice back in 2010. Your taste in music very much echoes my own and as someone who works in a bookstore I have always loved your Library Thing. As you know I gave up blogging for personal reasons last year and post only intermittently nowadays. Hopefully you may be able to do the same. Take care.

  16. Damn, I just discovered this fantastic blog today! Too bad for me, David I love what I see and I love all of this music. I have most of it in my collection anyway but it's great to discover new things and also just new angles on what you already love.
I'm looking forward to reading more and I hope your blog won't disappear any time soon.
    All the best,
    Gordon
